On Wednesday, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) gave the green light to the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Co.’s plan to install flashing lights and gates at the County Road 35A grade crossing in Wyandot County.

The railroad will be responsible for completing the upgrades by Feb. 18, 2013. Federal dollars will fund the improvements.

PUCO is responsible for evaluating Ohio’s public crossings to determine the need for installing active warning devices. From 2001 to 2011, the annual number of train-motor vehicle collisions fell from 123 to 64, according to the commission.
