CSX and other railroads yesterday highlighted the importance of the blue and white Emergency Notification System signs at railroad crossings as part of a public awareness event by Operation Lifesaver Inc.
ENS Sign Awareness Day was created to educate the public and first responders on where the signs are located and what they're used for. Displayed at grade crossings, the ENS signs provide a phone number for people to call when there is an emergency on the track, such as a stuck car.
The phone number connects to the railroad operator's emergency dispatch team. The signs also display a unique crossing identification number, which the dispatch team can use to identify the location of the emergency, CSX officials said in a press release.
“ENS signs make it easy for anyone to report emergencies, whether it’s a stalled vehicle, a person on the tracks, or other potential hazards. With one quick call, our dispatchers can locate the problem and take immediate action, which can make all the difference in preventing accidents," said Chris Bennett, director of public safety and infrastructure protection at CSX.
CSX created a video to promote the importance of the ENS signs; it can be viewed here.
