The Toronto Transit Commission has deployed more than 80 additional workers as part of a public safety initiative for the TTC subway network.
The added personnel includes visible maintenance and transportation managers who will rotate through the network during peak service hours, TTC officials said in a press release.
The Toronto Police Service also will deploy more than 80 officers on the subway, in addition to regular patrols, TTC officials said. The transit agency is training its own chief and mobile supervisors in de-escalation tactics to support station staff.
Safety actions have been part of recent discussions between the TTC, Toronto police and the ATU Local 113 and CUPE 5089, which collectively represent TTC workers. Potential next steps include working with experts in housing, mental health and drug or alcohol addictions.
TTC already has acted to improve staff safety, including increasing the presence of special constables, adding station supervisors, deploying more uniformed TTC employees and upgrading the network’s camera system.
