U.S. Customs and Border Protection to use centralized station at Savannah port

Last week, the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) announced it signed a five-year agreement with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that provides the federal agency access to newly renovated offices and expanded examination space at the Port of Savannah’s Garden City Terminal.

The new centralized examination station will enable CBP agents responsible for multiple operations to work at a single site. The station will help improve the CBP's efficiency and effectiveness, and maintain the safety and reliability of the nation’s logistics network, GPA officials said in a prepared statement.


Unlike other ports, the Port of Savannah coordinates the movement of containers for inspection rather than requiring port customers to move their boxes to an off-site CBP station, they said.

The CBP manages 329 ports via 20 field offices. On a typical day last year, the agency processed 64,483 rail, truck and sea containers nationwide, as well as 253,821 incoming privately owned vehicles.
