Cargill recently opened a new canola processing facility in Regina, Saskatchewan, that accesses rail service from CN and CPKC.
The company began construction in July 2022. The facility can process 1 million metric tons of canola annually using crops from growers in Saskatchewan and western Manitoba.
Now, more of the growers’ crops will be processed domestically into high-value products — including oil for food and renewable fuels, and high-protein meal for animal feed — to help meet growing global demand for food and low-carbon fuel solutions, Cargill officials said in a press release.
The facility is located at the Global Transportation Hub in Regina, providing efficient rail access to domestic and export markets, they said. CPKC operates a 300-acre intermodal facility at the hub, which also can access a CN mainline.
To support rail and road infrastructure around the plant, Cargill purchased more than 400 acres near the hub. The company also operates canola processing facilities in Camrose, Alberta, and Clavet, Saskatchewan.
