The Manitoba government and CentrePort Canada Inc. have selected masterplan real estate development firm Focus Equities Inc. to develop the 665-acre CentrePort Canada Rail Park in Rosser, Manitoba.
To be located near Winnipeg, the park will feature rail-served industrial space and logistics infrastructure, and be served by BNSF Railway Co., Canadian Pacific and CN.
Estimated capital expenditures at the park could reach $2.5 billion or more, CentrePort Canada officials said in a press release. Construction is expected to start in summer.
Possible tenants include logistics companies that handle the packaging and movement of goods, food supply-chain suppliers, heavy raw material processors, bus and machinery manufacturers, and mining and mining-related companies, CentrePort Canada officials said.
The Winnipeg region is situated at the hub of international trading corridors. The park will offer global, national and local companies with large-volume shipping requirements an option to more efficiently and cost-effectively access, transfer and transport goods between trucks and rail, or access a nearby international airport with cargo capabilities, CentrePort Canada officials said.
Prospective tenants are interested in CP’s proposed merger with Kansas City Southern, which would created the first North American single-line railway to stretch across Canada, the United States and Mexico, said CentrePort Canada President and CEO Diane Gray.
"All inland ports have rail at the heart of their developments, and the CentrePort Canada Rail Park is the linchpin in realizing the vision for a true trimodal inland port — and North America’s largest — in Manitoba," she said. "As an integrated rail corridor connecting Canada through the U.S. to Mexico comes to fruition, significant opportunities exist for CentrePort to continue to grow and offer solutions to companies that manage part of their supply chain by rail."
