The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) has announced its President's Safety Award winners for the Central and Pacific regions. The awards recognize outstanding safety records of smaller railroads that have achieved either a 0.0 accident frequency rate, or the best safety rate as measured by the lowest accident frequency rate per man-hour of operation below the industry average, according to the ASLRRA.The winners in each region are chosen based on their 2017 accident and incident reporting data.In the Central region, the Terminal Railway Association of St. Louis was honored for operating the "most hours of injury-free operation." The railroad also was recognized for its safety performance among railroads with 250,000 to 500,000 man-hours worked. Also receiving awards for the Central region were:• Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad Co., which was recognized for its performance among roads with 500,000 or more man-hours;• Nebraska Central Railroad, honored for its performance among roads with 150,000 to 250,000 man-hours;• Kiamichi Railroad, recognized for its performance among roads with 50,000 to 150,000 man hours; and• Baton Rouge Southern Railroad, which was honored for performance among roads with less than 50,000 man hours.In the Pacific region, the San Joaquin Valley Railroad Co. received a President's Safety Award for most hours of injury-free operation. San Joaquin also was recognized for safety performance among roads with 150,000 to 250,000 man-hours worked.Others receiving safety awards in the Pacific region were:• Montana Rail Link Inc., recognized for performance among roads with 500,000 or more man hours;• Portland & Western Railroad, honored among roads with 250,000 to 500,000 man hours;• Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad, recognized among roads with 50,000 to 150,000 man hours; and• Columbia Basin Railroad Co., honored among roads with less than 50,000 man hours.Earlier this fall, ASLRRA announced the President's Safety Award winners for the Southern and Eastern regions.
