Florida East Coast Railway (FECR) officials late last week marked the first neo-Panamax ship to pass through the expanded Panama Canal on its way to PortMiami.

The ship, the MOL Majesty, is part of the G6 Alliance Transpacific PA2 service, originating in Asia.

FECR invested in infrastructure and equipment to allow PortMiami to expand to accommodate large vessels like the MOL Majesty that will transit the expanded canal.

FECR President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Hertwig, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez and Panama Canal Authority Administrator Jorge Quijano were among the guests who celebrated the event last week.

FECR re-established on-dock intermodal rail service at PortMiami allowing import and export cargo to be loaded directly onto or off of trains, linking the port to 70 percent of the U.S population in four days or less, FECR officials said in a press release.
