The Federal Railroad Administration has awarded a $23.2 million grant to the Florida Gulf & Atlantic Railroad LLC (FGA) under the federal Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvement (CRISI) grant program.
The grant will be used to help fund the $31.1 million Florida Panhandle Rail Resiliency and Connectivity Project, FGA officials said in a press release.
FGA will provide a 30% funding match for the project, which involves track improvements aimed at reinforcing the right of way along the Escambia Bay, and upgrades to several bridges along a 100-mile stretch of FGA's mainline in the panhandle.
The improvements are expected to improve resiliency, expand operating capacity and increase safety in an area vulnerable to hurricanes and other severe weather events, FGA officials said.
"Paired with our matching funds, this federal grant will go a long way toward enhancing this corridor’s vitality, improving its safety and fostering the revitalization of the communities it serves," said Ryan Ratledge, CEO of Gulf & Atlantic Railways, which owns and operates FGA.
