advertisement

Mississippi Export Railroad soon will officially mark its 90th anniversary. The 42-mile short line was incorporated in Mississippi on Nov. 10, 1922, as a railroad extending from with the corporate limits of Pascagoula, Miss., to Luce Farms, in George County, Miss. The company was officially organized on Nov. 15, 1922.

Mississippi Export Railroad currently operates between Evanston and Pascagoula, and interchanges with CSX Transportation and CN. Through haulage agreements, the short line also interchanges with Norfolk Southern Railway in Mobile, Ala., and Hattiesburg, Miss., and with Kansas City Southern in Jackson, Miss.

Mississippi Export Railroad's history dates back to 1894, when the Moss Point & Pascagoula Railroad was created. The four-mile railroad operated between Moss Point and Scranton, a village now annexed into the city of Pascagoula. The Moss Point & Pascagoula Railroad obtained a state charter on Aug. 18, 1894, and was organized a little more than a year later.
