In October 2003, New York & Atlantic Railway Co. (NY&A) shattered its monthly carload record by handling 1,883 units, according to the short line's January newsletter. NY&A set consecutive monthly carload records from July through October.

The four-month streak helped the 240-mile short line set an annual carload record in 2003 at 15,004 units.

Although NY&A registered carload increases in all commodity groups, the short line moved more units containing scrap and waste, and food products.

NY&A is owned and operated by Anacostia & Pacific Co Inc., which also controls the 129-mile Chicago SouthShore & South Bend Railroad, 111-mile Louisville & Indiana Railroad Co., and 85-mile Pacific Harbor Line Inc.
