Reading & Northern Railroad officials announced this week that the first rail cars have been unloaded at a new rail-truck transload facility, which is located at the North Star BlueScope Steel (NSBS) mill in Delta, Ohio.
The announcement caps a multiyear effort to convert shipments of anthracite from truck to rail, Reading & Northern officials said in a press release.
As part of NSBS's plans to expand production in Delta, the company was interested in improving delivery of anthracite coal from Pennsylvania. Reading & Northern began working with NSBS in 2018 to establish the transfer center adjacent to the Delta mill.
The railroad supplied unloading equipment, secured dedicated pneumatic trucks and negotiated with one of NSBS's suppliers to locate a site to unload rail cars and load trucks. Reading & Northern also purchased additional covered hoppers required to meet the supply needs for the steel mill.
By bringing together trucking and transloading services and investing in rail cars and unloading equipment, the railroad was able to assist NSBS in converting 100 percent of its anthracite business from truck direct to rail-truck, according to Reading & Northern.
Other organizations that helped with the achievement include Norfolk Southern Railway, Indiana & Ohio Railway, Ag Trucking and Metal X, Reading & Northern officials said.
