The SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority (JRA) has accepted a $2.1 million grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) for five railroad bridge rehabilitation projects on the Nittany & Bald Eagle Railroad.

The funding comes from PennDOT's Rail Transportation Assistance Program and will cover approximately 70% of the projects' costs, JRA officials said in a press release. Four bridges are on the short line's mainline in Blair, Centre and Clinton counties; the last bridge is on its Bellefonte Branch in Centre County.

The grant is one of 30 rail infrastructure grants awarded by PennDOT on Jan. 21

"The mission of the Joint Rail Authority is to further economic development through the improvement and expansion of rail infrastructure in the central [Pennsylvania] region. PennDOT has been a consistent partner in achieving this mission and we are extremely thankful for this investment," said JRA Chairman Scott Harvey.

Additionally, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development on Jan. 20 awarded a $404,818 grant to the JRA for its Route 54 grade crossing replacement project in Montour County.
