Seminole Gulf Railway (SGLR) began renewing 11.5 miles of its line to allow for increased train weight and higher track speeds between Fort Ogden and Cleveland, Florida.

The project is being funded in part by a $9.6 million federal Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements grant. The Florida Department of Transportation District 1 also will contribute $4.3 million to the project, while SGLR will self-finance the remaining costs of the $18.2 million project, according to an SGLR press release.

Anticipated to take 18 months to complete, the project will entail track installation of heavy-weight rail and the replacement of decayed timber ties with steel ties. The project will result in improved operating reliability, greater resiliency from extreme weather, lower maintenance costs and enhanced environmental benefits, according to an SGLR press release.

The railroad upgrades will improve the track structure, which will increase the line capacity to serve growing demand for one of the fastest growing regions in the nation, SGLR officials said.

A short line, SGLR operates from north Naples to Arcadia, Florida, where it connects to CSX. SGLR transports building materials, plywood and drywall, aggregates, propane, plastics and recyclables.
