Alstom Transport recently announced a reorganization designed to streamline the division and better serve customers.

During the past few years, Alstom Transport has doubled in size through expansion and acquisition, and the company’s processes, roles and responsibilities needed to be simplified and refocused to manage the business as a single entity, according to a prepared statement.

The new organization comprises four newly created regional businesses — northern Europe, southern Europe, the Americas and Asia-Pacific. Employees in each sector will be responsible for all customer contacts, including business development, tendering and project execution. Employees also will be responsible for each sector’s profit and loss.

The sectors will be supported by a single operations group that will manage all Alstom Transport factories and engineering centers

"To meet our customers’ actual needs and expectations — as well as our own profit targets — we will make sure that the specifications we agree at contract time are both comprehensive and stable, so that we can then focus all our efforts on delivery according to contract terms," said Alstom Transport President Phillippe Mellier.

Mellier also announced that during the past few weeks, Alstom received $550 million in new contracts, including a $184 million contract to supply 28 six-car Alstom METROPOLIS trainsets to Shanghai Mass Transit Yangpu Line Development Co. for the city’s future metro line.

The 14.5-mile Yangpu line will run from Shanghai’s Yangpu district to Pudong and includes 24 stations.

Alstom’s Barcelona, Spain, plant will manufacture the car-body shells, and the Le Creusot facility in France will manufacture bogie frames. The cars then will be assembled, painted, fitted and tested at Shanghair Alstom Transport Co, a joint venture between Alstom and Shanghair Electric Corp. Delivery is scheduled to begin in October 2005 and be complete by the end of 2007.
