Altamont Commuter Express to test wireless access on trains

Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) passengers soon will have access to the digital world. Wireless solutions developer PointShot Wireless plans soon to implement a trial program to provide free Internet access onboard ACE trains.

The Railpoint™ Wi-Fi-equipped trains would enable passengers to access email, the Internet, corporate intranets, instant messaging and digital entertainment. During the trial, the service will be free of charge for passengers who bring a Wi-Fi-enabled laptop or handheld computer on board.

ACE expects about 30 percent of its passengers will use the service — the first Wi-Fi trail in the United States, according to a prepared statement.

In July, Bell Canada and PointShot Wireless implemented a similar program on VIA Rail trains.
