April 24: Updates from Progress Rail, IAS, Cubic and Auto Truck; Also: remembering Brown Railroad Equipment's Daniel Brown

• Progress Rail Services Corp. has reached an agreement with RailAmerica Inc.’s San Joaquin Valley Railroad to supply four repowered, low-emissions PR30 locomotives. Progress Rail will repower the four-axle, GP-type locomotives with Caterpillar 3516C-HD engines rated at 2,995 horsepower and equipped with exhaust after-treatment technology verified by the California Air Resources Board (ARB) to achieve the equivalent of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 4 line-haul emission levels, according to a company press release. The locomotives which will operate in California’s San Joaquin Valley and be equipped with a combination Diesel Oxidation Catalyst/Selective Catalytic Reduction after-treatment system to significantly reduce emissions of nitrogen oxide and particulate matter.

• International Asset Systems® (IAS) announced that Florida East Coast Railway L.L.C. (FEC) has implemented IAS® EquipmentRepair to modernize its equipment maintenance and repair operations. The change is designed to enable the railroad to manage and improve container equipment and chassis repair processes, which facilitate communicates and cooperation with internal FEC offices and external service providers.

• Cubic Transportation Systems, through its Australian division, has obtained a $65 million, three-year contract to provide expanded operations, ticketing equipment maintenance, infrastructure and other services for passenger-rail operations in Sydney. The contract includes provisions for two one-year extensions.

• Auto Truck Group, which provides custom upfitted vehicles, has promoted Matt McGowan to director of sales, western region. Action plans developed and approved through the company’s recent strategic planning process led to the realignment of its sales team and the new position, Auto Truck Group officials said in a press release. Based at the Bartlett, Ill., facility, McGowan will work with the western sales team and the group’s Denver and Colorado Springs facilities to strengthen existing account relationships and initiate new business development, they said. McGowan joined Auto Truck Group in June 2009 as a sales manager. He most recently was fleet sales manager for the northeast sales area and also was responsible for maintaining relationships with major fleet management companies.

• Daniel Brown, who owned and operated Brown Railroad Equipment in Mitchell, Ill., for 35 years, died April 21 in Maryville, Ill. He was 76. A U.S. Army veteran, Brown was a member of the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association, North American Rail Car Association and numerous other rail associations. He is survived by his wife, Anita, two sons and two daughters. Memorials can be made to the Alton Children's Home in Alton, Ill.
