CMI-Promex Inc.’s patent-pending ProLite® plastic signal housings recently passed American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association “Class B” wayside requirements for environmental and vibration factors.

Alstom Transport performed required tests on the housings at its West Henrietta, N.Y., lab.

CMI-Promex received technical input from GE-Plastics to develop the housings as an alternative to cast-metal housings. Produced from GE’s Lexan® copolymer, thermoplastic sheet and resin, the housings are designed to resist corrosion and damage from the weather and ultraviolet rays. CMI-Promex’s ProLite® signals feature light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

“We have long known that using longer-lasting LEDs alone would not solve the problem of frequent signal maintenance because the metal housing was still subject to degradation,” said CMI-Promex President Wayne Ligato in a prepared statement. “Our ProLite® signal housings, combined with LEDs, make these signals maintenance-free for a decade or more.”

The company currently offers a larger plastic housing and eight-inch LEDs for freight-rail applications and a multiple-lamp stackable design for transit-rail systems. CMI-Promex also supplies movable bridge, expansion and compromise joints to the rail and transit industries.
