Canadian National Railway Co. and Optimization Alternatives Ltd. Inc. (OA) recently reached an agreement under which the Class I will extend its use of the supplier's intermodal software for three years.

CN will continue to use Optimization Alternatives Strategic Intermodal Scheduler (OASIS) and Gate Activity, Inspection and Tracking (GAIT) software. During the past six years, the Class I has used OASIS and GAIT at its intermodal terminals to manage gate processing and work orders, track inventory, automatically plan loads and report various information.

"The development of our Intermodal Excellence (IMX) initiative involved improving the quality of our intermodal terminal services and information systems," said CN Vice President of IMX Paul Waite in a prepared statement.

Under IMX, CN applies its scheduled railroading practices — first introduced to the carload segment — to intermodal business. The Class I provides pre-defined daily train capacity; slot, gate and equipment reservations; and day-of-week pricing. The initiative has helped CN meet intermodal equipment demands and make terminals more fluid.
