NS obtains software to sharpen track-condition analyses

Norfolk Southern Railway recently purchased track-analysis and data-management software from Industrial Metrics Inc.

The railroad obtained "RPR Office System" to help analyze rail profile
and geometry data; "RPR Track Analyst" to analyze track-condition data and create reports; "RPR Grinding System" to plan and ensure the quality of rail grinding; and "RPR Track View" to manage track-condition and rail-wear data.

RPR Track Analyst includes "Visual Rail Replacement Plan," which is designed to forecast when a curve and tangent segment should be replaced based on rail wear, time and tonnage. The software also includes "Visual Tie Plan," which would enable NS to identify segments containing fatigued or wide-gauge track based on Gage Restraint Measurement System data, and determine the required number of ties to replace at each location.
