On Feb. 18, Wabtec Corp. announced it obtained additional contracts — worth about $100 million including options — to provide subway-car components to MTA New York City Transit (NYCT).

Late last year, the supplier received NYCT orders totaling $150 million for brakes, couplers and current collectors. Under the add-on contracts, Wabtec now will supply door operating systems and panels, and event recorders, increasing the orders' total value to about $250 million, including options.

The orders are part of NYCT's R-160 program, under which the agency expects to begin taking delivery of 1,700 new subway cars in 2006. The cars will be built by ALSTOM Transport and Kawasaki Rail Car Inc.

"These new orders, along with the previous contract for brakes and other equipment, will provide a solid base of business for our Transit Group, beginning with full production in 2006 and continuing for several years after that," said Wabtec President and Chief Executive Officer Gregory Davies in a prepared statement.

WABCO Transit will supply brakes, couplers and current collectors; Vapor Rail, door operators; Milufab, door panels; and Wabtec Railway Electronics, event recorders.
