Alstom has received an order for 15 additional new-generation Avelia Horizon high-speed trains from SNCF Voyageurs in France. Avelia Horizon consists of two short-length, high-performance, compact cars and double-deck coaches with a design allowing for a 20% increase in passenger capacity compared to previous models. One train can hold up to 740 passengers. Maintenance costs will be significantly lowered and a remote diagnostic system enables predictive maintenance. The contract is worth 590 million euros and is the second optional addition for SNCF, which has ordered a total 100 trains.
Balfour Beatty accomplished a milestone in the ongoing modernization of Los Angeles International Airport with the placement of the final structural steel beam for the automated people mover train stations. The West Central Terminal Area station — the largest of six stations being built — received the last of nearly 2,000 tons of steel set in place this week. Construction has been underway since February, when foundation work began. The 1.2-million-square-foot station will connect the airport train system to multiple terminals and the L.A. Metro light-rail system.
