ATC, a joint venture between Alstom, TSO and Costain, has obtained an infrastructure contract for the Crossrail project in the United Kingdom, according to an Alstom press release. Valued at $450.7 million, the contract will require the Alstom-led venture to fit out the 13 miles of twin tunnels that will stretch under London with track and power equipment needed for Crossrail trains to begin operating in 2018. ATC will install more than 25 miles of track, along with rigid overhead conductors, a system being used for the first time in the U.K. to power heavy mainline trains through tunnels.

Siemens Industry Inc. Smart Grid Rail Electrification is concluding an installation project involving Miami-Dade Transit's Palmetto substation. Siemens provided the equipment for a double ended substation, which powers the north end section of Miami-Dade's Metrorail. The project followed work Siemens Rail Electrification completed for the Miami-Dade County Earlington Heights extension, a 2.4-mile rail connection to Miami International Airport and a Metrorail station.

The Railway Supply Institute (RSI) has promoted Nicole Brewin to vice president of government affairs and Robyn Leach, to VP of administration. Brewin, who joined RSI in 2001 as assistant VP, plans and implements RSI's government relations strategy. Leach joined RSI in 1999 as office manager. She also manages RSI's finances and assists with activities associated with RSI program committees, the Coordinated Mechanical Association, RSI trade shows and the Railway Interchange conference and exhibition.

Pacer International Inc. has appointed Julie Krehbiel executive vice president of sales and marketing-intermodal, effective April 8. Krehbiel previously spent 23 years with Union Pacific Railroad in key business development and marketing positions, including president of Union Pacific Distribution Services and vice president and general manager of automotive, a position she held from April 2005 to April 2011. Her "experience in the key automotive industry vertical and with our major rail suppliers will be valuable as Pacer continues to executive its companywide strategy," said Pacer Chairman, President and Chief Executive officer Dan Avramovich in a prepared statement.

Knichel Logistics has named John Pendel vice president of over-the-road services. He has 33 years of experience in the supply-chain business. His background includes stints with Del Monte Foods, Paragon/Monteverde and Heinz North America. Pendel's initially will focus on streamlining the operations team and building a structured carrier base to support the company's growth strategy.

Lewis Martin, a former president of the Railway Engineering-Maintenance Suppliers Association (REMSA), died Jan. 30 in Rockledge, Fla., the association announced yesterday. He was 94. Born in Ohio, Martin moved to Chicago as a young adult to embark on what became a lifelong career as a sales and marketing executive, according to an obituary published on Floridatoday.com. He was a former alderman in Des Plaines, Ill., and served on the boards of several industrial associations, including REMSA. Martin is survived by four daughters, four sons, 21 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. His wife Jean died in 1994. A B-26 bomber pilot during World War II, Martin flew 65 combat missions over Europe. He was awarded the Silver Star for valor during the Battle of Normandy on D-Day, and recently was decreed to be a Chevalier (knight) of the French Legion of Honor for contributing to France's liberation from the Nazis.
