Arup was chosen by the California High-Speed Rail Authority to manage its future 500-mile high-speed rail line's sustainability program. The rail system — designed to operate on 100% renewable solar and battery power — will save an estimated 62,000 annual plane trips and take an estimated 400,000 cars off the road each year, according to an Arup press release. As program manager, Arup will focus on renewable energy modeling and procurement, climate change adaptation and resilience, sustainable design criteria, greenhouse gas and air quality emissions, carbon offsetting and sustainability reporting. The engineering firm also will conduct hazard analysis and design approaches to mitigate climate change-related risks.

Jacobs has been selected by the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority as the prime consultant to deliver general engineering consulting services for passenger-rail initiatives under the Transforming Rail in Virginia infrastructure program. The one-year contract is valued at $10 million and includes a three-year renewal option. The infrastructure program aims to double current Amtrak state-supported service and increase Virginia Railway Express service over the next decade. Jacobs also will support general planning and consulting services under a separate $10 million contract with an option for four more years.

Duos Technologies Inc. implemented its first subscription services agreement with an unnamed transit-rail operator. Under the $300,000 contract, Duos will provide access to its rail-car inspection portal platform, optional artificial intelligence detection models at key inspection points, and customer training, installation and rail-car data services. The company expects to provide the same near real-time inspection data and alerts that have been developed and tested with Class I customers.
