Hitachi Rail recently completed an upgrade to a 37-mile section of rail between Budapest's Rakos station and Hatvan in eastern Hungary that is used for passenger and freight operations. The project involved upgrading six electronic interlockings, implementing European Train Control System Level 2 on the rail line, installing 73 new point machines and integrating 23 level crossings into the safe signaling system, Hitachi officials said in a press release. The upgrades feature an AI-based diagnostics feature to continuously supervise every Hitachi Rail point machine along the line.

FreightCar America Inc. yesterday reported first-quarter 2025 revenue of $96.3 million, down 40.2% compared to Q1 2024. The company reported Q1 2025 net income of $50.4 million, or $1.52 per share, and adjusted net income of $1.6 million, or $0.05, per share, primarily reflecting a $52.9 million noncash adjustment due to change in warrant liability. The company reported planned rail-car deliveries of 710 units in the quarter compared to 1,223 units in Q1 2024. The company ended Q1 2025 with a backlog of 3,337 units valued at $318 million.

Keolis Commuter Services, the operating and maintenance partner for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Commuter Rail, last week awarded a total of $50,000 to 25 students in the commuter-rail service in Brockton, Boston, Lawrence, Lynn and Worchester. Those cities' public school districts have high percentages of students from underserved communities and first-generation families. Scholarships are awarded based on merit and financial need. Students can use the $2,000 scholarship to help pay for post-secondary education or job training, according to a Keolis press release.
