Railinc Corp. is partnering with North Carolina State University to research supply chain optimization through big data analysis. The partners aim to identify opportunities for shifting long-haul shipments from truck to rail, reducing highway congestion, shipping costs and emissions, Railinc officials said in a press release. Railinc, a Association of American Railroads subsidiary, provides rail data and information technology services to boost efficiency across the railroad industry.

Alstom, as part of a joint venture, has been awarded a contract valued at 4.9 billion euros by the Australian Victorian Government to complete the east section of the suburban rail loop (SRL) subway project in Melbourne. Alstom's share in the contract is 1 billion euros, Alstom officials said in a press release. The joint venture consists of Alstom and development and contracting firms John Holland Group, KBR, WSP and RATP Dev. The SRL is Australia's largest rail and housing infrastructure project. At full build out, it will consist of 56 miles of subway tracks through Melbourne's middle suburbs, Alstom officials said.

Railway Interchange planners announced that Union Pacific Railroad CEO Jim Vena will deliver the keynote address at the 2026 Railway Interchange to be held June 2-4 in Omaha, Nebraska. Vena served as UP's chief operating officer from 2019-2020 and as senior adviser to the chairman in 2021. In August 2023, he returned the Class I as CEO and is now overseeing the proposed merger of UP and Norfolk Southern Railway. Vena also is chairman of the Association of American Railroads. Last month, Vena was presented with the 2025 Railroad Innovator of the Year Award by Progressive Railroading and RailTrends.
