Rail supplier news from Trinity Railcar, Bombardier, Siemens, Greenbrier, Kelly-Hill and Emerson (Nov. 5)

Trinity Industries Inc. subsidiary Trinity Railcar Repair Inc. has acquired Seaboard Railcar Repair. The transaction includes the acquisition of maintenance facilities in Oklahoma and North Carolina, with access to major railroad interchanges. "This transaction supports the growth of our lease fleet and the associated maintenance and regulatory compliance required as the fleet ages," said Trinity Industries Senior Vice President D. Stephen Menzies in a press release. Trinity's leasing company has been a customer of Seaboard, accounting for a large portion of its business, Trinity  officials said.

The Metro do Porto light-rail system in Portugal is among winners of the Veronica Rudge Green Prize in Urban Design from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Bombardier Transportation and other consortium partners were responsible for system's design and delivery, including the manufacture of more than 100 Bombardier FLEXITY light-rail vehicles, and the installation and commissioning of a Bombardier CITYFLO 250 rail control system. The award recognizes excellence in urban design.

Siemens supplied the signaling and control technology for the Marmaray Tunnel, which Turkish State Railways opened in Istanbul on Oct. 29. The eight-mile tunnel links the rapid transit lines on the European side of Istanbul with those on the Asian side. Trains operating at two-minute intervals will transport up to 75,000 riders per hour. The project's second phase will expand the tunnel to accommodate long-distance passenger trains.

The Greenbrier Cos. Inc. reported net earnings of $22.5 million, or 69 cents per diluted share, excluding $1.8 million in restructuring charges, on revenue of $484.2 million in the fourth quarter of its fiscal-year 2013. Net earnings, including restructuring charges, totaled $20.7 million, or 64 cents per diluted share. New rail-car deliveries reached 3,500 units and orders totaled 3,400 units for the quarter.

Tim Rock has joined Kelly-Hill Co. as chief operating officer. Rock has 30 years of experience in the rail industry, most recently as regional vice president at TranSystems in Kansas City, Mo. In his new role, he will focus on Kelly-Hill's operations, management and expansion.

Emerson Bearing, a Boston-based bearing company that serves original equipment manufacturers and maintenance, repair and operations firms, has begun supplying bearings and related products to the railroad and transportation industries. The company's new rail division supplies bearings for drive systems, chassis and vehicle bodies.
