Rail supplier updates from Greenbrier, Axion, Bombardier and Hub Group (March 1)

The Greenbrier Cos. Inc. has entered into an asset purchase agreement with The Timken Co. for the sale of substantially all equipment utilized in Greenbrier's reconditioned wheelset roller bearing operations in Elizabethtown, Ky., according to a Greenbrier press release. Concurrent with the sale, Greenbrier will enter into a long-term supply agreement with Timken for reconditioned and new bearings. The transaction is anticipated to close before May 31, the end of Greenbrier's fiscal third quarter.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit has purchased $500,000 worth of recycled composite ECOTRAX™ ties from Axion International Holdings Inc. for use by Trinity Railway Express (TRE) between Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas. TRE regularly purchases and installs ECOTRAX mainline ties, as well as specialty ties for use in grade crossings, turnouts and bridges, according to an Axion press release.

Bombardier Transportation was recognized for internal communications excellence at the annual Rail Business Awards held in London on Feb. 27. Bombardier received an award for its continuous improvement program titled, "Safety with attitude — let's just do it." The communications for the program involves all of Bombardier's services locations in the United Kingdom.

Hub Group Inc. has been recognized as the Walmart 2012 Intermodal Carrier of the Year for providing "outstanding customer service, operational excellence and creative transportation solutions," according to a Hub Group press release. Hub Group is one of 11 transportation providers recognized this year in Walmart's annual "Carrier of the Year" program.
