• NCC Construction Norway has obtained a $177 million contract to construct a rail tunnel with accompanying evacuation tunnels between Larvik and Porsgrunn, southwest of Oslo, for the Norwegian National Rail Administration. The total tunnel length is 5.5 miles, including the evacuation tunnels at 2.5 miles.

• RailComm’s Domain Operations Controller (DOC®) train control system at RailAmerica Inc.’s American Rail Dispatch Center soon will have the ability to dispatch based on Canadian Railroad Operating Rules (CROR), according to RailComm. The new functionality is being designed in conjunction with RailAmerica personnel. CROR dispatching will be accessed through RailComm’s SaaS delivery method. RailAmerica has been using RailComm’s DOC train-control system to dispatch multiple subdivisions for its railroads since 2002.

• Thales has obtained a contract from the Grand Port Maritime du Havre (GPMH) for the turnkey installation of a PIVOS computer-based interlocking system for the service lines at the Port 2000 Terminal. The contract covers all aspects of the rail signaling system, including preliminary studies, equipment, installation, testing and user training. The system will enter service in July 2013. This is the first time a new signaling system has been installed on a port rail network in France, according to Thales.

• Westport Innovations Inc. has obtained agreements with Caterpillar Inc. to co-develop natural gas technology for off-road equipment, including locomotives and mining trucks. Caterpillar and Westport will combine technologies and expertise, including Westport™ High Pressure Direct Injection technology, and Caterpillar’s off-road engine and machine product technology to develop the natural gas fuel system. Caterpillar will fund the development program. When the products go to market, Westport expects to participate in the supply of key components.

• Kasgro Rail Corp. announced that its newly manufactured Schnabel Car, WECX 801, is considered the “World’s Largest Railroad Car.” The 231-foot, 400-ton, 36-axle car rises 18 feet above the top of the rail and has a load limit of more than 1,000 tons. WECX 801 can shift up to 40 inches laterally and 44 inches vertically, according to a Kasgro press release. WECX 801 will be owned and utilized by Westinghouse Nuclear to transport nuclear reactor containment vessels. It’s scheduled to enter revenue service at the Port of Charleston in July.

• Cubic Corp.’s board reported today that Walter J. Zable, the corporation's founder, chairman, president and chief executive officer, has died. He was 97. Zable had guided Cubic since he founded the company in 1951, leading it to “global prominence” in providing defense systems, mission support services, and transportation systems and services to customers worldwide, Cubic officials said in a prepared statement. William Boyle has been named interim president and CEO. He will continue to carry out his current role as chief financial officer. Walter C. Zable has been named chairman. Both Boyle and Walter C. Zable have served as senior executive officers and directors of the company for many years. "Walter J. Zable has been a wonderful inspiration to Cubic Corp. and its family of companies and its more than 7,800 employees,” said Boyle. “He was also a generous and caring person who did a great deal for the community. He will be missed, but we remain resolved to maintain and expand Cubic's global presence as a tribute to our remarkable founder.”
