Rail supplier updates from National Salvage, Bombardier, Nomad, HP, Jacob Associates, Lilee and Parsons-Odebrecht (Oct. 15)

National Salvage & Service Corp. (NSSC) and TASKpro L.L.C. have entered into a long-term agreement to research, develop and implement supplemental treatments for wood crossties. NSSC and TASKpro will use TASKpro's xxtraBOR™ wood treatment system to maximize the life of in-track and recycled ties by using technology designed to arrest incipient decay, reduce the spread of invasive species (such as Formosan subterranean termite and emerald ash borer), and minimize "spike" kill associated with the interface of wood and mild steel, according to an NSSC press release.

Bombardier Transportation recently delivered the first MOVIA metro train to the Land Transport Authority of Singapore as part of a contract for 219 driverless MOVIA cars obtained in November 2008. Also, Bombardier recently turned over the first FLEXITY tram of the new series to Poland's Krakow Transport Authority. In June 2010, the authority ordered 24 trams, each of which has a 229-passenger capacity.

Norway's major passenger-rail company, NSB, has implemented wireless Internet on 114 of its trains with at least 27 more to follow. The four-year project has been managed by rail communications specialist Nomad Digital. NSB has ordered 50 new Stadler trains, which also are equipped with Nomad's solution. The first 23 trains have been delivered, with an additional 27 trains under production in Switzerland.

HP Kazakhstan announced Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZh) subsidiary JSC TransTelecom has signed a $62 million contract to reduce the railway's energy use. Under the 13-year agreement, HP will serve as the prime contractor, working with JSC TransTelecom to deliver, implement and support the KTZh Traction Power Dispatch Automated Control System, an automated railway energy management system (REMS). Using information from REMS, KTZh anticipates saving 7 percent in electrical energy consumption and 13 percent in diesel consumption.

Jacob Associates recently announced the following promotions to the associate level: Bob Baldwin, who has 15 years of construction management experience; Jennifer Jordan, who for 17 years has specialized in geotechnical and tunnel engineering of deep underground structures; Laura Miles, a construction claims specialist with 25 years of experience on civil engineering projects; and Joe Schrank, who has 12 years of experience in rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering.

Lilee Systems' TransAir PTC-3004 radio has been certified by the Federal Communications Commission and Industry Canada for authorized use throughout the United States and Canada, the company announced. The TransAir suite of products was designed to facilitate fast roaming for seamless wireless connections, and deliver an "end to end" positive train control communication system to achieve the highest level of security for connecting critical control stations for complete rail communications safety, according to a press release.

The MIA Mover, Miami International Airport's automated people mover,  earned a 2012 Best Projects award from ENR Southeast, Parsons-Odebrecht Joint Venture (POJV) officials announced. POJV constructed the MIA Mover guideway and stations and installed the full turnkey operating system, including eight Crystal Mover vehicles, under a design-build contract. The project will be recognized along with others at an awards program to be held Nov. 15. In addition, ENR Southeast  will recognize the MIA Mover for having an outstanding safety record and job-site procedures, according to a POJV press release.
