Rail supplier updates from Pacer, The Andersons, Alstom, Axion, Trinity and Greenbrier (Oct. 25)

Pacer International Inc. has entered into a multi-year agreement with Union Pacific Railroad to arrange, manage and provide intermodal freight transportation services for automotive parts and other shipments between the United States, Mexico and Canada. Pacer also will serve as UP's network logistics manager for cross-border shipments and provide rail container and chassis management services for UP in Mexico. In addition, Pacer named Paul Svindland chief operating officer, effective Nov. 12. He most recently was managing director at AlixPartners L.L.P., where he co-led the global transportation and logistics practice. Svindland also held various positions at ICG Commerce and Maersk Inc.

The Andersons Inc. has begun construction on a 27,300-square-foot rail-car paint and blast shop adjacent to its car repair facility in Maumee, Ohio. Slated for completion in spring 2013, the new facility will enable the company to wash, blast and paint rail cars in an efficient and environmentally friendly way, company officials said in a prepared statement. The project also includes 1,700 feet of new track to allow the cars to move throughout the facility.

Alstom has obtained two orders from Empresa de Ferrocarriles del Estado (EFE), Chile's state-owned railway company. The first, valued at $44 million, is for the supply of 12 Xtrapolis regional trains; the second, valued at $12.9 million, is a five-year maintenance contract, renewable for up to 30 years. The new trains are part of EFE's Xpress project, which aims to improve the connection between Chile's capital, Santiago, Nos and Rancagua, capital of the O'Higgins region. The trains will be manufactured in Barcelona, Spain.

Axion has announced the first trials of its ECOTRAX® composite ties in Southeast Asia. With distribution partners in the region, Axion will supply the ties for use in mainline mass rapid transit applications as a direct replacement for timber ties, according to a press release.

Trinity Industries Inc. reported third-quarter net income of $63.2 million, or 80 cents per common diluted share, compared with $31.9 million, or 40 cents per common diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Revenue increased 19 percent to $937.5 million from $791.1 million a year earlier. Operating profit jumped 35 percent to $141.9 million. Also during the quarter, the Rail Group reported orders for 4,865 rail cars, bringing the backlog to 31,330 units valued at a record $3.3 billion versus a backlog of 30,610 cars valued at $3.2 billion as of June 30. In addition, 4,145 cars were shipped in the quarter. The Rail Group projects full-year shipments to total between 19,150 and 19,650 cars.

The Greenbrier Cos. has named Jack Isselmann director of corporate relations and communications. He will lead the company's interaction with political officials and provide strategic direction on legislative matters, according to a company press release. Isselmann most recently served as a partner at Tonkon Torp L.L.P. and head of its Oregon Government Relations practice group. Prior to joining the firm in 2006, he was deputy director for Oregon's Economic and Community Development Department. Isselmann will assume the public affairs responsibilities previously held by Susan Wilson, who recently moved to China, where she will continue to do international consulting work for Greenbrier.
