Rail News: Railroading Supplier Spotlight

Rail supplier updates from Trinity, Alstom, Siemens, CANARAIL, URS and Parsons Brinckerhoff (Sept. 7)

• Trinity Industries Inc. has entered into definitive agreements with Otter Tail Corp. to purchase certain DMI Industries Inc. property, plants and equipment for approximately $20 million, according to a Trinity press release. Assets to be acquired primarily include 665,000 square feet of heavy manufacturing capacity and equipment in North Dakota, Oklahoma and Ontario, Canada.  The Ontario facility acquisition closed yesterday. Trinity will take possession of the property, plants and equipment in the remaining facilities in two separate deals expected to close in the fourth quarter, the press release states.

• Alstom Transport has obtained a $63 million order from the Swedish Public Transport Authority for eight additional Coradia Nordic X61 regional trains. The order is part of a framework agreement with the authority signed in 2008. The recent order brings the total number of Coradia Nordic trains ordered to 13. The new trains will replace older trains on the Ostgota railway network. Delivery is planned for early 2015.

• Siemens Mobility and consortium partner Kapsch have obtained an order worth $117.5 million from Deutsche Bahn AG to equip a newly built 230-kilometer line running from Ebensfeld via Erfurt to Halle and Leipzig with Level 2 of the European Train Control System (ETCS). The new line is part of the German Unity Transport Project No. 8, which includes a new high-speed rail route from Nuremberg to Berlin, and is part of the railway axis of the trans-European transport network from Scandinavia to Italy.

• CANARAIL has obtained a contract with Labrador Iron Mines (LIM) to upgrade LIM’s railways in Northern Quebec and Labrador, Canada. CANARAIL will provide expertise to improve and optimize LIM’s current onsite transport solutions, according to a company press release.

• URS Corp. announced Dean Groves and Peter Piattoni have joined the company’s New England operations as part of its infrastructure and environment division. As director of strategic growth, Groves will help direct URS’ expansion plans throughout New England. Prior to joining URS, Groves was president and chief executive officer at Fay, Spofford & Thorndike Inc. As director of business development for New England, Piattoni will work with branch offices and market sectors to coordinate business development and strategy. He previously served as vice president of business development at Fay, Spofford & Thorndike.

• Parsons Brinckerhoff has appointed John Munro director of the firm’s Mechanical & Electrical Technical Excellence Center. In his new role, he will lead the center and focus on growing the firm’s tunnel and underground infrastructure business, enhancing marketing capabilities and strengthening client relationships, according to a company press release. An executive in the firm’s Australia office, Munro has relocated to the United States to work in New York City. He has more than 25 years of experience, primarily in tunnel technology and fire engineering strategies.
