Rail News: Railroading Supplier Spotlight

Rail supplier updates from Wabtec, Bombardier, STV, Benesch, Jacobs, Schneider National and A&K Railroad Materials (Oct. 2)

Wabtec Corp. has acquired LH Group for $48 million. A United Kingdom-based provider of maintenance and overhaul services for the passenger transit market, LH has annual sales of $65 million. Wabtec officials anticipate the transaction to be accretive in the first year, they said in a prepared statement.

Bombardier Technology has obtained a $92 million order to provide the Bombardier CITYFLO 650 mass transit train-control solution for the new Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line being constructed in Malaysia. The five-year contract was awarded by Mass Rapid Transit Corp. Sdn Bhd, the line's owner and developer.

STV has acquired Architecture/vbn (VBN), an architectural design firm based in Oakland, Calif. VBN will be integrated into STV's West Coast operations, STV officials said in a prepared statement. VBN's work has encompassed large- and small-scale projects, including intermodal terminals, light rail, rail stations, transit centers and bus facilities.

Alfred Benesch & Co. has merged with Purcell Associates Inc., a structural and transportation engineering firm, Benesch officials announced in a prepared statement. The merger will expand Benesch's presence in the northeastern United States and will strengthen the firm's core transportation services, they said.

Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. was selected to be on a design review panel for Rail Corp. New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, under a three-year contract. The pact includes options for multiple one-year extensions. As a panel member, Jacobs will provide major design input into the verification and validation processes for rail capital projects.

Schneider National Inc. recently opened a U.S. Intermodal Training Academy in Los Angeles. The academy, the company's second, was designed to provide experienced new hires with a focused, hands-on training experience involving intermodal. Schneider opened its first Intermodal Training Academy in Chicago earlier this year.

A&K Railroad Materials Inc. has promoted Jim Huenefeldt to central region manager, per the consolidation of the company's Midwest and Central sales territories. Huenefeldt has more than "13 years of success in sales" for A&K, company officials said in a prepared statement.
