GE Transportation reported that revenue grew 9 percent to $1.4 billion in the third quarter compared with third-quarter 2011. Driven by locomotive orders from international customers, GE Transportation's orders rose 21 percent to $1.2 billion during the quarter. Segment profits jumped 35 percent to $265 million. "The third quarter continued our record of strong revenue growth and strategic investments for the future," said Lorenzo Simonelli, GE Transportation's president and chief executive officer, in a prepared statement. Significant events during the quarter included the introduction of the EU version of GE's PowerHaul locomotive and the launch of GE Mining, he said.

Bombardier will modernize 110 passenger-rail coaches for the 30-year-old regional service Trenitalia (Italian Railways), according to a press release. The work will include upgrades to door systems, trucks and air conditioning systems; and the installation of new interiors, and electric and other systems. Bombardier will modernize the vehicles at its rail services center in Vado Ligure, Italy. Also, Bombardier recently delivered the 600th MOVIA metro car to the Delhi Metro Rail Corp. in India.

Alstom has delivered the last Pendolino coaches for the West Coast Main Line in the United Kingdom currently operated by Virgin Trains. The delivery, which occurred earlier than anticipated, is part of a $2.35 billion contract placed by the UK Department of Transport in 2008. The contract included four Pendolino trains (including 11 cars) and 62 additional coaches to complete its existing fleet, as well as maintenance of the entire fleet of 56 Pendolino trains. Meanwhile, Alstom and SYTRAL have introduced the first of 12 high-capacity Citadis tramways for use in the Lyon urban area in France. The new tramways, which will be able to accommodate up to 300 riders, will enter service in November.

Miner Enterprises Inc. has named Jonathon Marlow sales engineer. He has more than 10 years of experience as a design and senior project engineer in the railway supply industry. At Miner, he will report to the director of North American sales and will serve accounts in the Midwest and Northeast.

Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) is a sponsor of the Transportation Association of Canada Foundation Scholarship, which recently named Mark Reimer of University Manitoba as the recipient. Reimer will apply the scholarship toward his research and studies as he completes a master's degree program in transportation engineering, according to an HMM press release. The scholarship was created to support the education of young professionals in Canada's transportation industry.
