Rail News: Railroading Supplier Spotlight

US&S to cut jobs after Network Rail cancels contract

On Feb. 17, Union Switch & Signal Inc. (US&S) announced plans to furlough about 40 employees at its Pittsburgh Technology Center because of a suspended project in the United Kingdom.

US&S was developing a Network Management Center (NMC) for Network Rail to help optimize the railroad’s traffic planning and reduce system delays. Due to financial and budgetary constraints, Network Rail officials recently decided to suspend the project.

Depending on close-out activities and other factors, US&S might have to further reduce its workforce.

"We feel strongly that the NMC project was well on its way to delivering major benefits to the UK rail system," said US&S President and Chief Executive Officer Ken Burk in a prepared statement. "While we are disappointed that the project has stopped … we are fortunate to have other projects that utilize many of the resources assigned to the NMC project."
