• Skanska USA has obtained a $262 million contract from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority for the Second Avenue subway systems project in New York City. Skanska and joint venture partner LK Comstock and Co., a subsidiary of RailWorks Corp., will construct the track and systems for the project’s first phase, according to a press release. The project will include installation of track, train signals, communications systems and traction power between 105th Street and an existing subway station at 63rd Street. Additional work will include modification of existing facilities and systems to ensure connectivity with the Second Avenue subway system.

• Cooper Bearings Inc. plans to build a 75,000-square-foot remanufacturing plant to provide products such as remanufactured Hyatt boxes and conversion boxes, remanufactured bearings, swing housings and other related truck-type parts for the freight and transit locomotive market, according to a press release. The new facility will have rail access, utilize cloud computing and focus on “green” solutions.

• Pacer International Inc. reported income from operations more than tripled to $4.2 million and earnings per share increased 6 cents to 3 cents in the fourth quarter compared with the same period a year earlier. Adjusted earnings per share for 2011, which reflected the elimination of a deferred tax assets adjustment, was 7 cents per share compared with the previous year. Fourth-quarter intermodal revenue increased by $8.5 million, or 3 percent, to $289.7 million while logistics revenue tumbled 25.8 percent to $68.3 million. Overall, quarterly revenue fell 4.1 percent to $358 million.

• The Timken Co. has appointed Brian Hupp senior sales engineer for its rail business. Hupp will manage key rail customer accounts in the Chicago area. He joined Timken in 2003 as a college intern working in the life test lab. Since then, he has held various positions, including product development technician and application engineer. Hupp most recently served as continuous improvement senior analyst of supply chain.

• CF Rail Services recently updated its website, www.cfrailservices.com, to feature all of the firm’s locations and branded rail-car repair shops under one web address, company officials said in a prepared statement. The change means the previous standalone sites for subsidiary repair facilities, Hoosier Railcar, Mississippi Railcar and Waycross Railcar, will direct web traffic to the new site.
