WMATA to open five stations early and under budget

On Sept. 21, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) board unanimously approved opening five new stations two months ahead of schedule on Jan. 13, 2001 — just in time for the next presidential inauguration. The project also is $139 million under budget.
The new stations, Congress Heights in the District of Columbia, and Southern Avenue, Naylor Road, Suitland and Branch Avenue in Prince George’s County, would complete the 103-mile Adopted Regional System originally planned in the late 1960s.
Nearly 8,000 park-and-ride spaces would be available to the projected 22,000 people WMATA plans to serve.
