Union Pacific Railroad recently began a multi-million-dollar double-track project in Texas as part of a plan to improve operating efficiency in the Sugar Land area. The Class I plans to build six miles of double track in Missouri City, Texas, to help extend a second line through the city, Sugar Land and Stafford, Texas. To continue into fall, the first construction phase includes preparation activities inside UP's existing right of way. The second phase involving track installation is scheduled to start in 2015."This capacity expansion project will allow us to serve our customers more effectively and should have a positive impact on the community by improving our operating efficiency," said Brenda Mainwaring, UP's vice president of public affairs-Southern Region, in a press release. Meanwhile, the Class I also has begun a $20 million trackwork project in Kansas that's scheduled for completion in mid-November.The project calls for upgrading a line between Topeka and Kansas City. Crews will replace 66,700 ties, install 42,700 tons of ballast, renew surfaces at 116 grade crossings, replace about one mile of rail in various curves, install more than 11 miles of new rail and change-out 13 switches. The project is one of nearly 1,500 that UP plans to complete this year across its 32,000-mile network to help improve operating efficiency, reduce motorists' wait times at crossings and enhance safety.
