Rail News: Union Pacific Railroad

UP wins chemical shipper's 'excellence' award; subsidiary achieves high 'SmartWay' score

Union Pacific Railroad recently received Eastman Chemical Co.’s “Supplier Excellence Award” for the second consecutive year. UP is the only railroad to obtain the award, which recognizes consistent performance in providing “high-quality services,” and improving efficiency and competitiveness for the chemical shipper, according to the Class I.

Established in 1991, the award is based on an Eastman Chemical supplier’s ability to “meet the highest level of reliability and quality,” UP officials said in a prepared statement. The shipper selects recipients based on their contributions to creating value, corporate image, overall stewardship and history of customer service.

Meanwhile, UP subsidiary Union Pacific Distribution Services (UPDS) recently achieved the highest possible score in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) SmartWay Transport program. UPDS became a SmartWay partner in 2008.

A collaborative effort between the EPA and freight sector, SmartWay Transport is designed to improve energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse-gas and air pollutant emissions, and improve energy security. Companies that participate in SmartWay Transport programs are recognized for social responsibility and leadership.

A logistics service provider, UPDS earned the program's highest score by employing most of the commercially available fuel-saving strategies and evaluating the latest emerging technologies, UP officials said in a prepared statement. Scores are calculated by various fuel-efficiency and emission-control technologies, policies and fleet strategies.
