Yesterday, Union Pacific Railroad marked the 20th anniversary of its fiber-optic program.

On June 28, 1984, UP officials signed a contract enabling four major telecommunication companies to install fiber-optic cable along its rights of way. Now, more than 33,000 miles of cable carry voice and data transmissions along UP's track.

The Class I's Safety, Asset Utilization and Fiber-Optic Technology Group oversees fiber-optic and wireless facilities on the railroad's rights of way.

"Union Pacific's one-point-of-contact right-of-way has proven to be ideal for this endeavor," said Jim Farrell, UP director of fiber optics and asset utilization, in a prepared statement.
