System Manager-Track Standards
CN

Martita Mullen is doing her part to reduce the shortage of women in engineering.

Mullen is system manager-track standards at CN, where she is responsible for track inspection and maintenance standards, as well as evaluating and implementing new technologies and practices. She earned her bachelor's degree in civil engineering at Northwestern University and a master's in civil engineering at Tufts University.

In between her educational stints, Mullen worked for Illinois Central Railroad as a track designer and assistant track supervisor; after graduate school, she returned to railroading as a management trainee at CN, which acquired Illinois Central in 1998. Since then, she has led a handful of major projects, including construction of the CN intermodal terminal and Harrison Yard in Memphis, Tenn., and CN infrastructure upgrades for the GO Transit expansion in Toronto.

In addition to her own accomplishments, Mullen is helping pave the way for other young women to find success in engineering and transportation. In 2012, she organized the CN Railroad Society of Female Engineers, which performs annual projects that encourage women in pursuit of railroad careers.

Also last year, Mullen led a team of female railroaders to create "Aspire," a CN-sponsored event held in the United States and Canada to expose high school girls to career opportunities in railroading.

Mullen's role model?

Her grandmother, Bessie Chambers. "She was such a hard-working and dedicated woman. She was very loving toward people, worked hard to help others, was always a lot of fun, and she always challenged me."

Five-year plan?

"I'd like to be playing a significant role in running one of our regional engineering groups."

An interesting fact?

"I enjoy renovation projects and uncovering the beauty in things that appear less than beautiful."

Favorite pastime?

Hosting get-togethers with nieces and nephews; travel.
