Kansas City Southern de Mexico S.A. de C.V. (KCSM) and the city of San Nicolas de los Garza, Mexico, recently signed a corridor agreement involving 5.6 miles of track in the Monterrey suburb.
KCSM will provide $2.7 million under the pact, which calls for increasing train velocity from 12 mph to 30 mph and preventing vandalism.
The railroad and city plan to install protection devices at grade crossings; synchronize municipal stop lights at seven crossings featuring the protection devices; rehabilitate 15 crossings and close several crossings; undercut the corridor; sell advertising space on the right of way to pay for maintenance of the 13 crossing protection systems; grant an old passenger depot to municipal police to serve as a permanent outpost in a high-crime zone; and beautify the corridor.
KCSM plans to duplicate the corridor approach in other communities, starting with Morelia next year.
