American Association of Railroad Superintendents (AARS) has named a scholarship competition in honor of one of the railroad industry’s most decorated — and enthusiastic — journalists.
At its 2001 annual meeting, held July 28-31 in Missoula, Mont., the association unveiled the Frank Richter AARS Scholarship Program in recognition of Richter’s long-time dedication to the association and its ongoing activities.
The first two scholarship winners are Justin Grewell, who this fall will be a graduate student in environmental management at Yale University; and Brienne Terril, a junior majoring in computer science at Bucknell University.
Richter, who’s covered railroad transportation passionately for five decades, continues to write his monthly "Comment" for Progressive Railroading, the magazine he co-founded. In 1994, he received Intermodal Association of North America’s Silver Kingpin Award for "Excellence in Intermodalism."
