A 140-year ownership dispute between CSX Transportation and North Carolina Railroad Co. (NCRR) over a track segment near Raleigh, N.C., came to an end Dec. 10.
CSX agreed to acknowledge NCRR — which owns a 317-mile freight- and passenger-rail corridor between Morehead City and Charlotte — as track owner while NCRR will grant CSX rights to continue using the segment and allow the Class I, if it chooses, to add up to two miles of double track to meet future capacity needs.
The settlement also would enable Triangle Transit Authority to use a right-of-way north of the existing CSX/Amtrak operations area between Raleigh and Cary to build track for the authority's planned regional passenger-rail service.
NCRR Chairman Sam Hunt believes the agreement will ensure CSX freight service in northeastern North Carolina, help attract new industries to the region and foster passenger-rail service along the corridor.
