CSX completes Chicago-area quiet zone (1/31/2005)

1/31/2025

CSX Transportation engineers no longer blow train horns at grade crossings between from 99th Street in Chicago to 87th Street in Evergreen Park, Ill. CSXT recently completed the last phase of a Chicago-area quiet zone, which extends four miles and affects 14 crossings in the Windy City, Blue Island and Evergreen Park.

Under the last phase, the Class I installed median barriers at 95th and 87th streets in Chicago, and added four-quadrant gates at 91st Street in Evergreen Park. The railroad also closed one and relocated one private crossing.

In September 2004, CSXT began operating trains under quiet zone conditions from 123rd Street to 103rd Street in Chicago. The quiet zone was funded through a $3 million Illinois Commerce Commission grant.
