Last week, Florida East Coast Railway L.L.C. installed USA Signal Technology Inc.’s wireless video surveillance system on a drawbridge in Stuart, Fla., to monitor boat and barge traffic under the structure, and record any boat/bridge collisions.
The 351-mile regional plans to install the system on other bridges to prevent property damage claims.
The system is designed to record a high-resolution video of each boat, including registration number and name, and wirelessly transmit recordings to a security office. Operating system software enables security officers to view multiple video streams on a monitor screen that’s divided into quadrants.
“Boats and barges colliding with railway drawbridges are of great concern to the railroad industry since it happens about once or twice a week and can cost millions to repair annually,” said USA Signal Technology Chief Executive Officer Bob Stevenson in a prepared statement, adding that the FECR bridge is the company’s first rail industry installation and the firm just began marketing the system to other railroads.
