Union Pacific Railroad's decision to implement a new and proven napping policy in its eight-state Southern Region "addresses reality," says UP spokesman Mark Davis.
Implemented last month, the policy allows one train crew member to take a nap for up to 45 minutes while the train is stopped.
A March 1998 pilot program included 3,7000 UP train employees and proved successful, Davis says.
The policy, part of UP's Alertness Management program, will be implemented across the rest of the railroad by mid-year. The program also is designed to help employees address diet and at-home rest issues.
