Canadian Pacific recently introduced its first painted and decked out Hydrogen - Zero Emissions Locomotive (H2 0EL). The railroad chose each design element to illustrate the sustainability-driven project. The blue and green paint colors represent sustainability, water and technology, while the H2 0EL wordmark features angled typography to symbolize movement and progress.
This video shows the milestone event when the new H2 0EL unit was publicly unveiled for the first time.
Launched in October 2021, the H2 0EL program involves retrofitting line-haul locomotives with hydrogen fuel cells and battery technology to drive the electric traction motors. CP plans to build hydrogen production and fueling facilities at its yards in Calgary and Edmonton, including an electrolysis plant that can produce hydrogen from water.
The Class I now plans to field test and evaluate the technical performance of a hydrogen-powered locomotive and its supporting fueling infrastructure. CP aims to develop North America's first line-haul hydrogen-powered unit to significantly reduce greenhouse-gas emissions from locomotive operations.
