Late last week, RailPrime Senior Associate Editor Julie Sneider chatted with Todd Tranausky, vice president of rail and intermodal at FTR Transportation Intelligence, about the potential impact the expanding United Auto Workers strike at the big three national automakers would have on North American freight-rail traffic.

Tranausky also offered his take on how the ongoing migrant crisis at the southern U.S.-Mexico border will impact railroads.

The interview took place Sept. 22, just after Union Pacific Railroad, BNSF Railway Co. and Ferromex temporarily halted rail shipments over the border due to the unfolding situation in Eagle Pass and El Paso, Texas.

Earlier in the week, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security closed part of the border to rail traffic as a result of a congestion of migrants wishing to enter the United States. The DHS ended the rail traffic suspension at midnight Sept. 23.
