On May 2 — during his second day on the job as Norfolk Southern Railway’s new leader — Alan Shaw spent time with employees at three key locations: Conneaut, Ohio; Elkhart, Indiana; and Roanoke, Virginia.

Now president and CEO, Shaw succeeded James Squires, who retired on April 30. Shaw met with a dual rail gang in Conneaut, a track maintenance team in Roanoke and a spike drivers team in Elkhart, where he pulled a few spikes to gain a feel for that particular job.

The boots-on-the-ground exposure to frontline workers boosted his confidence that the railroad has a bright future, Shaw says. He aims to ensure NS is a place where everyone feels included and valued, and wants to contribute to the company's success.

“I’ve spent the last 28 years traveling our network, talking with our people, asking questions and learning. I’ve seen your skill and dedication and felt the pride in the essential role Norfolk Southern plays serving customers and moving America’s economy,” Shaw wrote in an open letter to NS workers dated May 2. “I know we’ll succeed because of our powerful network, best-in-class portfolio of customers, and exceptional and dedicated team.”

The following video includes highlights of Shaw’s visits to the three locations and comments from some of the workers he met.
